Thoughts and goals for this summer

Some thoughts to ponder before we get together for practice tomorrow.

1. We've talked about trying to plan a concert at some point during the
summer. If that's going to happen we've got to start planning NOW, and
everyone needs to step up to the plate and volunteer to do what is
necessary to see that this happens. I want to emphasize how much
planning and work it takes to to pull off something like this. It might
be worth looking into some sort of alternate venue that we might be able
to play at where we don't have to plan the whole thing.

2. The Schedule for Summer - Summers always get crazy in the MK Group,
so we need to talk about when band members will be here, tryouts, etc.
It might be necessary to ask some of the other MK's with potential
musical talent to start coming to practice and/or do tryouts again. The
Monday night schedule is also going to be a little different than
normal. I think we should be less reliant on the sounds system and do
more acoustic sessions so we don't have to spend as much time setting up
and tearing down.

3. Dynamics, Dynamics, Dynamics. I want us to focus on what we are
doing dynamically with our songs a great deal more than we have been
doing. Included in the emphasis on Dynamics, I also want us to develop
what we are doing rhythmically on the instruments(setting up more
rhythmic layers or contrasts) , and also experiment in developing more
intricate and planned harmonies.

4. The Sound system. When we do use the Sound System, I want us to
really concentrate on the balance between the vocals and the
instruments, as well as pinpointing the ideal overall volume. I think
we've actually been too conservative on the master volume levels when we
play on Monday nights. A ideal goal here would be that if someone is
standing in the back of the AC while we are playing, they should be able
to hear the vocals and the music clearly and crisply enough that they
can understand the lyrics that we are singing without the necessity of a
powerpoint. (I'm not saying we shouldn't use a powerpoint, but people
should be able to hear and understand exactly what is being sung without
having to look at a power point to know.)

5. Reading scripture to start off songs. - We've started doing this, but
it hasn't been all that consistent, so I would like us to up the
consistency on this. Something about prefacing our songs with God's word
seems to make worship much more poignant and meaningful.

6. Song Writing - Many of you have a lot of talent in song writing, some
more in the writing, and some more in the composing music for the
writing. I've been really pleased with some of the rough drafts that
we've got so far. It was neat to be able to actual sing a song during
our last worship time that Michael Hasty had written. I think we have
the capability in our group to do a lot more of this.

I'll probably think of some more stuff later, but this should suffice
for now.

See you tomorrow,
